School Readiness
Transiting from the relatively smaller preschool centres to “big kid” primary schools can be daunting for many children. As we know, success in school extends beyond being able to read and do math, but also in a child’s ability to make friends, organise materials, copy from the board, buy food from the canteen and even navigate around school. It is unsurprising that many parents worry whether their child has the necessary skills to cope with these different areas.
Studies have shown that providing a child with support in their formative years is more cost effective in the long run due to brain plasticity. Therefore, it would be important to provide children with the necessary support early to target any weaknesses they might have. However, while many parents can tell that their child is not keeping up, they are unsure of which areas the gap might be in or where to go to address the gap. At times, they spend a large amount of money on classes or enrichment activities that do not really benefit their children. Undergoing a school readiness assessment can help parents understand where the specific gaps are and how these might hinder their child’s success in school.
For school readiness assessments, our registered psychologist can conduct an evaluation which looks into your child’s cognitive abilities (also known as IQ), academic skills (literacy, numeracy, copying) and social emotional skills to understand his/her strengths and weaknesses.
Based on your child’s individual profile, our registered psychologist will be able to discuss with you suitable activities and forms of support that are specifically targeted to your child’s needs so as to maximise his/her potential.
